Lightsquared, who are developing a wireless data network, have been granted permission to use frequencies that are used by GPS, even though t is proven that thios will stop GPS receivers from operating near their transmitters. Luckily, sextants are not affected!

Mike Richey passed away - Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Mike Richey, expert on astro navigation and famous for his single-handed races across the Atlantic in the 26 foot junk rigged boat "Jester", passed away on 26th December at the age of 92. He was also one of the founders of the Royal Institute of Navigation, and served an apprenticeship with the sculptor and typrographer Eric Gill.

WinAstro is now supplied with a separate planetarium program, Stellarium, that lets you see the sky at night from your location, and identify the stars, planets and constellations. This helps you identify the body you want to take a sight on, and more generally to identify all the objects in the sky - a great way to make those night watches more interesting!

About Us

WinAstro is brought to you by Smartcom Software, a leading developer and supplier of software to the marine and general navigation sectors.

Smartcom Software was founded in 2005, from a restructuring of Marine Computing International, by Tim Thornton. The company has a team of staff who combine web and Windows software development skills with a high level of knowledge of navigation (both land and marine), cartography and hydrography, navigation related systems such as tides and e-navigation, and mobile and satellite communications.

In addition to WinAstro, we offer a range of other standard products:

  • TideWizard for tidal height prediction
  • PC Navtex for use of NAVTEX on a PC
  • SmartLog for Windows NMEA data logging and viewing software
  • SmartLog USB, a tin channel NMEA data logger that writes data to a USB memory stick
  • SmartMet weather information software for the PC
  • SmartCom for easy and efficient mobile and satellite phone internet connectivity

  • TeamSurv (also known as CoSuDec) - FP7 GSA sponsored project to use crowd sourcing to generate enhanced bathymetric data for nautical charts and other applications

Tim Thornton also writes, with two books on marine computing, two books on yacht design, a regular column in Yachting Monthly, and also articles and product reviews for other publications.
